SEO is a marathon, more than a race...

When businesses do online marketing, the common wish list item is to get top spot on Google for the most popular words and phrases in their industry and geographical area. But how possible is it to get indexed fast and just how do you do it? Further more, how can you be sure that if you do get to that coveted spot that you do a good job of converting the traffic into sales? It’s not an easy bunch of questions to answer.

Online success is more of a marathon than a race….

Google SEO Research

To get to the top spots on search engines you’ll need to know what your target audience is looking for. You’ll also need to know what your competitors are ranking for and then come up with a strategy to start to climb those ranks. It can take time, research, and effort. Without research, you won’t know what to strive for and won’t have a good indication whether or not it will work for you. You’ll want to learn about high ranking keyword phrases, about long tail SEO, about latent semantic indexing (LSI) and other facets of effective internet marketing.

Your Website Design and Web Copy

Your website needs to do more than tell people what you do and how to place an order. It also needs to be an online marketing and lead generation tool. It can bring you traffic, help you build your brand, and it can work as a vehicle to communicate with and build relationships with customers and prospects.  Your website has to rank well and it also has to provide customers and prospects with a great experience. It takes a multi-faceted ongoing marketing approach to make this happen.

Online Marketing Strategies

Online marketing strategies can help you get noticed, get rankings, get traffic, and make sales. Things such as: social marketing, content marketing, content distribution, and SEO copywriting can help. There’s a lot of competition out there (and if there isn’t right now and you have a profitable niche, there will be!) and investing in your marketing can pay a huge return on investment.

Ongoing Analysis

Once you’re getting traffic, making sales, and doing things that get you great Google SEO results, you’ll need to keep going. Measure your efforts, tweak for optimized results, and continually learn so you’ll continue to increase your success and grow your business. You’ll find a number of tools that will help you gauge where traffic is coming from and indications of how to improve your conversion rate.

If you’re not sure where to start, read up on search engine optimization. It’s not just important to learn how to get to page one but it’s also important to figure out how to STAY on page one. Relevancy and user experience are both of paramount importance. Consider joining webmaster and marketing forums to help you learn,  and consider working with someone who specializes in helping companies with their marketing (hint: Contact me).

Getting to the top of Google is important. It can take weeks or months of concentrated efforts to make it happen, depending on your level of competition. Getting there in the right places and optimizing your website so that the traffic will convert is even more important.  Working to maintain those rankings and then working to convert the traffic into customers is the key to success.  SEO isn’t evergreen so continually learn all you can about your market, web marketing, and how your customers are responding to your methods.  It can take a combination of content optimization, social marketing, on page and off page optimization, and other search engine marketing techniques to keep revenue flowing in.
